Anyone know how to get rid of the bothersome
Site Navigation side bar? I really don't use it and
it can be very bothersome for me.

Earlier versions of this website had a way to keep
it from showing up each time I entered the site.

Just to the User settings page, choose edit options then go down to bottom of the page. It is called the "floating Menu

Click on User Settings (above your avatar, on the right)
On the left-hand menu, click Edit Options
Scroll all the way down, and set "Use floating menu" to "No"
