As part of a repair/refurb on my workbench, I made up two cross-dowels for use in homemade vice assemblies.
The barrel nuts are made up of a piece of 1" ID plain black pipe and a 5/8" acme-threaded nut.
I followed this process:
- cut a slot in the pipe (for the nut) using a metal-cuttting disc in an angle grinder
- drill 1/2" hole through the pipe.
- set the nut in the slot and use a 1/2" dia rod (I used a drill bit) to align the holes. A 5/8" threaded rod has a root dia of ~1/2".
- cover the rod and the threads with tinfoil to protect from welding spatter
- weld the nut to the pipe.
- grind the welds
- enlarge the holes in the pipe with a large drill bit
- cut the pipe to length
Yesterday I welded some threaded couplers to more 5/8" Acme nuts to make nuts with integral clamping screws...stay tuned for the results of that experiment.
