hickory with hand tools?

From what I read everywhere, hickory is a bear to work with any tools, let alone hand tools. What are your experiences? Was thinking about having some quarter sawn chunks dry out to make some planes. Any thought?

Oh, it can be worked dry with handtools, but neither you nor your tools will enjoy it.

I have chipped a chisel in hickory..took a small crescent shaped chip out of a Marples Blue Chip (ironically) while wasting dovetails for a small box.
