I found this on my wood shelf. It probably came in a truckload of turning stock I got a while back. It didn't look like much, but I noticed it was very heavy. I cut a pen blank off of it and was surprised at how dense the grain is. Can anyone give me an idea of the species?

Thanks,

Adam

Adam,

It looks like Ipe (pronounced I-pay as told by someone form that country) "SOURCES: Throughout South and Central America plus the Caribbean. The tree grows on a variety of sites, from ridge tops to riverbanks and marsh forests"

If it is hard as a rock, it is probably Ipe, a Iron Wood.
