Reworking our shop this weekend in order to fit the CNC, any nuggets of wisdom regarding best dust collection piping/routing. I am currently using the Powermatic 1.75 HP with either a single 6 inch or dual 4 inch outlets. Looking for suggestions for type of material for the piping and anything you can throw my way!!

I used 5 inch snap lock pipe which I got at Home Depot for my similar size HF DC. It works fine from my point of view. I have 4 blast gates on it (5 inch) which are metal. On has two 4 inch flex lines for my bandsaw, one has one four inch flex (short) for my table saw, one has a single port for my CMS and one goes to a flex hose which I use on my jointer, planer, and router table. That flex hose is about 20 feet long. Even with that hose extended to reach my driveway it gets the chips coming out of my lunchbox planer. I think it pulls better because I exhaust outside instead of through a filter. I have a super dust deputy on the input and it gets all the visible dust and chips unless I let the collection bin overflow.

1.75hp is barely adequate for connecting one machine at a time with a 10ft, 6" diameter flex hose. Any cfm specs promoted by the company were made without anything connected to it. Adding a piping system will create enough resistance to flow that it will reduce total system flow and allow microscopic dust into the air. Wear a good dust mask and create a cross breeze with a box fan blowing outside with a door or window open on the opposite side of the shop during and after you use a machine that generates dust. You can buy inexpensive air monitors to let you know when the mask isn't needed. Fan table from Bill Pentz.

Want to diy a cyclone collector? I've got an unused 2hp and Bill Pentz fan. Have the plans too.

Run a copper line thru the piping connected to CNC and the DC. Before I did this I got shocked by the setup when running the CNC.

Hey Doug, Andrea at Bull City Workshop could probably use the 2hp fan! She's looking to upgrade her dust collection system for their shop and I'm going to help her out. I'm in Chapel Hill and her workshop is in Durham.

I'm taking an HF collector over to Andrea this week or next from Made4Me since we got our 5hp. Possibly an air cleaner also. They've got good potential for a classroom setup there.

Hello Michael,
I've told another woodworker $400 for both the fan and the correct motor. I'd better let him know there's another person interested, to be ethical. Anyway, it is here in Hillsborough awaiting a new shop.
Thank you for the message, Doug Siddens
