Hey guys, doing some cottage style shutters for a customer. She wants a simple painted cottage style measuring W20" x H42". They are not functional shutters, just the ones you mount to a brick wall. Should I use a french cleat at the top and brick anchored fastener at the bottom to allow the cypress to do it's thing? With the batten, should I slot the board and do a moving fastener to allow for swelling or am I just over complicating this?

Thanks guys,

Kurt

I use L screws in anchors (lead work best outdoors) and eye hooks on the back of the shutter. These are made with cypress, 3 coats of Rustoleum,

Built some Cypress shutters a couple of years ago. I just used some stainless steel lag screws utilizing the same holes that were in the original shutters. The holes are slightly enlarged to deal with the usual wood movement. But Cypress is not going to move much anyway, especially with 2 coats of exterior grade paint.
