Checking?

I cut down a Walnut tree and have four very large logs. I have a fellow coming to saw them into boards.

I read somewhere that one should "seal" the ends to prevent "checking."

These logs have been "down" for several months.

Is it too late?

If not, what should I use and how should I apply it to seal the ends?

Or, should I wait until we slab the logs into boards?

Charles, if you will do a search on the site about "End Sealer" you will glean a lot of good info.

The short answer to your question is:

1 - trim the ends back on the logs until all of the checking is gone - typically about 6" from each end.

2 - Apply end sealer ASAP after trimming. I would suggest two coats applied about 30 minutes apart. The two primary brands are Baileys End Sealer (www.baileys-online.com) or Anchorseal Classic from UC Coatings. Be sure to buy the winter formula, and get the Classic, not the "green" version.

3. Have the logs milled into lumber, stack and sticker out of the rain but in a location where they will have good airflow. Walnut is very receptive to air drying.

It is much easier to apply end sealer to a log versus ends of boards.

Good luck on your project.
