Actually, a beach bum and his BEAUTIFUL girlfriend. :embaresse
So I've heard a lot about this Klingspor place since I've been on here and given all of the weekends that I've had in Raleigh in the last two months, Christy and I decided to check it out. We went in there on Saturday and I really felt like a kid in a candy/toy store. I walked in and went straight for the wood. We're pretty deprived down here in this neck of the woods so it was no mystery why I was so drawn to it.
I've been meaning to make Christy a coffee table for a while now as her current one is about 1 foot squared. After an hour or two of walking around, patiently crunching numbers, I settled on a 4/4" x 14" x 6' board of Ash. It seemed to fit my budget at about $22 and I figure I can get a small coffee table, legs/skirt out of it. I know, I know, no pics, didn't happen. Well, here ya go. :icon_thum
Luckily, the backseat in her car folded forward. Would've been an interesting ride home if it hadn't. :rotflm:
Now for the ultimatum. I want to have this thing finished and up there for her by Friday night. Any other coffee table I've built has only taken me about three or four days, even with finishing. I don't think the time will be an issue as the design will be pretty basic. I want to use the bottom half (closest to me when I took the pic) as the table top. I'll get the legs and skirt out of the rest. Still not sure exactly how I'm going to do the legs. Just however it works out. Now I have a question. There is about a three inch crack in the bottom of the board. Should I fill this with something (if so what)? Or should I just not worry about it. I'm planning on finishing the table top with bar top epoxy. Not sure about the legs/skirt. Here is a picture of the crack. Sorry for the bad photo quality. :slap:
We really had a great time at Kilngspor. We spent about 75% of the time looking at the wood and enjoyed every minute of it. After it was all said and done, I don't think I got a discount, even though I mentioned this site, but it was only a $22 board. If it would've been a significant purchase I would've definitely spoken up about it. All in all, a great time. Can't wait to go back. :icon_thum
Cheers, ccasion1

BTW- I know the board isn't straight. Gonna do some milling and it shall be square. :thumbs_up
