I was looking at the pic in McRabbits album called "Benchbuilder".
I noticed that the adz being used, like many I have seen, have a hammer face on the back. On some examples it is more defined than others.
What is the intended purpose for the hammer face on a adz?
Any one who answers "Hammering" will be semi-ignored......

Alright, this is just my "edjumcated" guess. I have an adz with a smaller Pick-like flat end. I have used it multiple times to beat the bark with. This loosens green bark and allows it to be stripped easily. Just a guess

You all need to expand that picture to see the reason for the flat side on the adz -- it helps deflect the chips from the Adz man's swing so they don't contaminate the beer! Seriously, this picture was lifted from a thread that Monty did many months ago and I added a minor feature to the back end of the log.

BTW, I believe the flat side was/is used to drive wedges or a froe for splitting a log.
