Looking for a used planer, ideally around 24 inches, under $3k. Does anybody have one they want to sell? Or know someone who wants to sell? Thanks.

Not all big planers are alike. Is the below array what type and style you're interested in?

Looking for something made within the last 25 years roughly, works and is around 24 inches. Thinking something like Woodmaster, Powermatic, Laguna and maybe Grizzly, Jet.

I would prefer single phase but will consider 3 phase. I am not an expert by any means, but I understand that a 3 phase motor can be converted to single phase although I have no idea what it costs.

For starters, search out the amp draw on the 'Shiny from China' 24" planers for sale these days just to give you an idea of what you've got to feed the motor. Horsepower ratings can be meaningless these days.

If you want a converter, you'll have to use HP ratings. None are cheap. Rotary is the best for big HP motors, but a VFD converter would be cheaper if you're electrically savvy with setting parameters with digital keypads.

I used this company, bought a completed 25hp rated box. I would rather invest in real iron that I can always get my $ back on. I have several 5 to 35 hp motors if you decide to go the 3ph route. Also 6 and 8' spiral and blower if needed.
$6300. total investment second hand for below. Bet I could easily double my investment if selling no matter how long I use.
25hp rotory phase converter
Oliver 299 planer (1940's)
5hp Unisaw (1970's)
12" Moak jointer (1940's)
7.5 hp Cyclone (1980's)
Oliver 3 hp shaper (1940's)
20 hp compressor
