I cut down a Red Maple from my land that was slowly dying this past spring. I had set the bulk of the trunk aside for milling at a later time, but decided to give it a try on the lathe. Since the lathe is new to me and I am new to turning, I figured I had nothing to loose. It's a little more decayed than I had expected, lots of worm holes and beetle holes that they filled with sawdust, but all together it came out nice with the spalting.
