The base instructions say to use any hardwood for the stretchers in the lenght needed and 1.5'' square. Instead, I'm trying a lamination of 3/4'' plywood with 1/4'' luan sandwiched in between. It fits snugly in the base frames. It should just as strong if not more so than any hardwood because it is plywood and laminated.
