I was looking at the new T-7 which except for a slightly better straight jig, a better truing tool, and a new blue paint scheme is about the same as the older Supergrinds but is now going for $500 or more. The T-7 ultimate package is selling for $900!!! Yikes!!

It is a good machine, but that good? I bet if you check the NCWW classifieds in a few days there will be really nice used one for sale at about half price. ;-);-) Yeh, yeh, I know, but I'm going away for a few days and haven't had time to take pics.

I think I saw that they are including lifetime replacement of the grinding stone. That might account for the price increase.

Cost is based on how much people will pay, how good the competition is and construction costs. I'm sure with the Worksharp 3000 coming of age (assuming that it truly works as well as claimed) the Tormek will be taking a hit. So they will either go down in price, be on sale constantly, or just fade away. The product is good , but the costs of it and accessories are in the range of someone starting up a small business. How many people went out and bought the Foley Belsaw sharpening system years ago ?

Personally my needs are mostly planes and chisels, and Worksharp does them handily ( if only they would redesign to do wider plane blades). I have multiple machine blades, so sending them out is not a problem.

Alan is this the beginning of a stealth gloat for a new Worksharp:eusa_danc ?

Jimmy:)

I would have thought with Jet releasing their version of the Tormek that it would have driven the price of it down substantially, but it doesn't seem to be the case. I have a Tormek and will say it is a good sharpening system, but I think it is way overpriced.

I could never see paying that much for a sharpening system but being a good scottish woodworker, I borrowed a Tormek for a weekend from a friend of mine to check out the system by sharpening some of my hand chisesls.
My chisels have never been this sharp and more accurately faced in thier entire existance. They were so sharp that I when I finished sharpening everthing in my shop, I went and washed my hands and found that I had 8 small cuts on my hands that I could not even feel until I put them under water. All from the sharpness of the chisels.
I can't justify the cost of a Tormek, but I am looking for a slow grinding alternative that can give me similar results on chisels. I think I will check out the worksharp posted byJimmy.

Add-on's are coming soon according to a conversation I had with Pro-Tools. You will notice on the right side under the wheel there is a mount already there. I believe they are shooting for the Spring.

I use a Makita that lays flat to sharpen all my planer, jointer, and chisels blades and with 2 different wheels, it goes really fast. Mirror finish and dead flat. I can't remember how much I paid 20 yrs. ago but it wasn't much.

Doesn't the Makita throw water when you use it?

That's great to hear Ken, because I'm starting to get tired sharpening the old fasioned way:lol:. I love the Tormek and the whole idea of it( many accessories), but I could use the money spent on it for other things.

I have the WorkSharp 3000 and really like it. In fact, if anyone is interested, I reviewed it on my website: http://www.joeswoodstuff.com. Have a look at the review and tell me what you think of it...

I never used a Tormek or Jet but I think the addition of water as a coolant is valuable. However, for the price, I'm perfectly content using my slow variable speed grinder and a cup of cool water for dipping

BTW, I'm not in the business of reviewing tools, just thought it would be fun to get my opinion out there :-D

Nice review, Joe.
Just an FYI for WS owners, I am using generic 6" no-hole discs in various grits from Klingspor instead of paying the WS prices. Also I found 6" Micromesh discs are available from Micro-Surfaces directly for $1.89 each. Part number for 6" PSA 3600 is 3S3660P and 6000 is 3S6060P.

Biggest price effect has to do with Euros to Dollars conversion ratio. Right now the buck isn't doing too well. That is one of the leading causes of the run up of oil. Oil is traded in barrels, (40 gal.) and priced in dollars. With the dollar being weak compared to other currencies, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out.

Joe,
That isa great review on the sharpener. I use sandpaper and my bench grinder for my hand tools and send my other cutters out for sharpening. Still watching the different sites and Craigs List for a used tormex. You did notice the word watching. :crybaby2:
I am satisfied with the scary sharp method, it it does leave an edge similar to a laser sharpened knife.
As to Allen and his desire for a new improved Tormex, the dreaded wood guy disease strikes again.

Later,
Albert :saw:

Thx, Joe

Thanks Ken! That's great info on the MicroMesh too. I bought some from Klingspor in a pinch but I wouldn't do that again, it was too expensive.

While I couldn't find the site Ken mentioned, I did a search and found this site which has a full assortment of MicroMesh in all shapes and sizes at excellent prices: http://www.sisweb.com/micromesh/.

I never purchased from them so if anyone gives it a try let us all know how the experience is!
