This message is strictly FYI for those of you who are U.S. military veterans!

Last week I made a purchase at Lowe's and, as usual, presented a copy of my DD-214 form and my drivers license to get the 10% veteran's discount. They gave it to me, but said they would no longer accept just the form: their new policy requires a valid ID card. Based on my experience, the only way to get an actual ID card is to be registered w/ a VA hospital for medical treatment, unless you are active duty or retired from the military. I contacted Lowe's via email, and this is the response I received:

Thank you for inquiring about the military discount. Lowe's offers an
all-day, every-day 10 percent Military Discount to all active, reserve,
disabled, and/or retired military personnel including immediate family
members. Individuals only, businesses do not qualify for military
discount.
You may receive the discount with a valid, government-issued Military ID,
Common Access Card or VIC (Veterans Identification Card). Please visit
your local Lowe's store, provide a valid, government-issued Military ID
or VIC, and ask the cashier for the discount.

All other military veterans will receive the discount on the Memorial
Day, Fourth of July, and Veterans Day weekends. (Customer must provide
Military ID, Common Access Card, VIC, or a DD214). The DD214 will only be
accepted on the holidays listed above.
I went back and forth several times for clarification, and they stated this policy has been in effect since Feb., 2010.

I was in Lowes last week and the gentleman in front of me did the same thing. The cashier told him she would do it this time but she could lose her job if the manager found out. She then told him to go get an ID and he could continue to receive the discount. I am a vet but had never heard of this discount.

And you can't get an ID unless you qualify for medical treatment.

Bill you answered my question before I could ask. My son-in-law does have military ID, but he makes somewhat frequent trips to the VA Hospital for injuries received while in Afghanastan.

Lowe's offers an all-day, every-day 10 percent Military Discount to all active, reserve,
disabled, and/or retired military personnel
.

Thanks for the clarification, I do not fit any of those categories.

For all of you folks that have/are served/serving - you have my undying respect and gratitude.

Thank you.

I'm glad to hear that Lowes has chosen to make it difficult to get the discount that all veterans deserve. I would rather shop at HD or Ace hardware anyway so this will be an easy decision.

Home Depot gives me a hard time for the discount. Have never had a problem At Lowes, that is why I go there.
