I just deleted the new user qwertyuiop with email address f-f-f-f-f-f@libero.it. The ip address was 95.236.177.7 which is a Rome, Italy based ISP. Given that user name is the top letters of the keyboard, I suspect at the very least this person isn't really the type of person we want.:rotflm:

I just logged on, saw the new user notice and was about to look at his IP origin. I suspected a snake n the grass, too. Thanks for your prompt action.

I think these spammer types should at least pretend to have an imagination... so we get an entertainment value out of their applications

I think the only reason he joined was because his buddy ASDFGHJKL:" did. :rotflm:Good catch Steve. :wsmile:

Look like we need to ban that IP address -- the new user this morning is also from 95.236.177.7 -- he used the lower part of the keyboard and moved to Rowan County!

I deleted him as he was downloading files from the library. I do not know how to ban the IP address.

I've essentially banned a whole bunch of European IPs. It is an interesting as to whether the action I took was too drastic, except perhaps to smother this current surge. In general you could say that since the person is in europe, they don't meet our registration requirements any way. But there are probably several of our members like David Fenton who live in europe, but then again he is already registered so that not a problem.

I suggest we keep the current span I banned 95.x.x.x for a week and in meantime we think about whether I used 16lb sledge to drive a thumb tack:gar-Bi A week should be enough to calm down this current rash.

I believe our zealous Italian got back on again, re-registered as Lumberwood and as tgyhuj from IP 79.25.186.12 -- Lumberwood was on when I came on and was downloading files from the Download Library. Going to Who's Online showed and Italian IP address. I don't have time to delete him because I am on the road at 7:00 AM.

I have taken this another step. The addresses that we have banned are from what is called the RIPE database. RIPE is the official ho;der/assigner of IP addresses for most of europe. I went to their DB and created a list of ALL their currently IP ranges. and then converted that to a form that can be used by by vBulletin's banning option. BTW, that is Admincp->vBulletin Options->User Banning Options->Banned IP Addresses

I also uploaded a copy of the IP address in a form that can be used by vBulletin's banning option.

You guys need to be careful about blocking Italian IP addresses. This enterprising young person may work their way to our shores and start up a thriving olive oil business, only to seek you out and exact his revenge!

As they say in the south of Italy, Ciao, y'all!
