I am working on repairing a outside lounge chair. I think it is western red cedar. It is missing a few pieces and looks like it needs a finish to protect it from the elements.

What would you recommend?
Also, are stainless steel screws the best to use?

For cedar I think you are better off with SS hardware. I think a light power washing and a clear coat sealer or stain is all you need. Look for ones that have UV protection.

I would have the tendency to:

1. Clean it up.

2. Sand it smooth.

3. Apply a few coats of BLO.

4. Next year, do it again... and again... and again...

Maybe just leave it unfinished for the ultimate no maintenance finish. If you choose to finish it then a high quality marine spar varnish like Epifanes would be a good choice, but you'll still have to refinish it every few years. It's real thick stuff, but can be conveniently thinned with spirits for easier application in the nooks and crannies.

+1 on SS hardware. For a few $ more you can get 316 grade SS for excellent corrosion resistance even in a marine environment.
