Mike Davis' thread asking for tractor collectors appears to be an offer to sell upon review. Is this akin to the Porsche issue we had earlier this week?

Boy, thats a good catch.

I have a thing for old tractors, so I didn't think about it. :embaresse

He did state he was offering it up for trade:
I just need it gone and would accept anything wood or tool related in return.

I guess its also a question of trade vs. sale?

It is a fine line we travel. My guts says to leave it alone since it is gray. You could make a stretch that a the tractor could be used to haul wood from a wood lot. Besides it looks like Mike has a taker at this point.

Maybe a trade is a sale for goods rather than cash :dontknow:
I like that argument. The reason for restricting the type of items for sale is to avoid becoming another Craig's List. Same reason we have the 5 post minimum. On the other hand, we want to keep this site useful to the members. By allowing "items that are traded (not sold) for lumber and/ or woodworking tools", we keep the noise to a minimum.

If there is a consensus on this, it needs to be captured in the Classified Ads policy. That way, nobody can claim inconsistency or bias. I'd be happy to make that update to the text.

My earlier post was somewhat tongue-in-cheek (and no, I have no idea what that expression really means). The idea of a trade, particularly for wood or woodworking isn't offensive. But... (ever the devil's advocate) we don't want to become a barter.com any more than we want to become a craigslist. And I do suspect that the IRS looks at sites like barter because there is the chance of business without tax.

Given the ambiguity, this might be something we want to add to the policy?

One thought, we might look at the Classified Ad Policy as a more global policy on what can and cannot be offered on the site.

Right now, it is targeted at the Classified and Wood forum areas for selling.

Then take out some of the verbiage in the Forum Descriptions that try to be a mini-policy.

My "gut meter" says this one is ok and the porsche posting was a bit outside the bounds. Both are clearly not inline with the literal reading of the classifieds policy but could be consiered to be in a grey area. I'm less bothered by this one as being a tractor it seems closer to the spirit of the site than a porsche and he's also offering to trade for wwing supplies....

As a more general question, is it possible we're being too proactive/careful here? Perhaps these kinds of posts are appropriate for the Off-Topic area? I think about other posts that are similar in nature (Hey, I'm selling my house, if anyone knows someone who is looking let me know..., etc) and wonder if these're aren't ok should we look at those as well? I've posted a few items in classifieds that, now that I read the policy again, were probably out of bounds but at the time seemed ok. One was a push-reel mower (in my head I classified it as a tool so it was ok) and the other was a single serving coffee maker. This I thought I'd post here before putting it on CL as the same model had been discussed in several threads as a great thing to have in a shop and many members had expressed interested in having one. Both were quickly traded so it seems they were appreciated posts....

Just food for thought. However we proceed it definitely seems that we should update/clarify the policy as necessary or gently remind the membership of the policy as it stands....

If I owned a Porsche I'd haul wood in it TOO! LOL
Besides, since Jeremy is moving to FL, who here could buy a Porsche? Think of all the toyls that $$ would buy!
Interesting discussion, though. Thanks for the insight.
