To Flock or not to Flock

I accasionaly use flocking inside boxes and cutouts for shadow boxes. Lately, there seems to be a run on the most popular colors of adhesive. However I have heard of using acrylic paint as an adhesive.
Anybody tried that ?

I think the open time could be a limiting factor but other than that it should work.

Unrelated to sourcing, but how does this material (flocking in general) hold up over time? I’ve thought about either flocking, or possibly a leather liner on a jewelry box project I have coming up, but had concerns of it breaking down, and wrecking the piece over time, (years down the road)?

I switched from flocking for the reasons you cite. Looked good at the beginning but heavy rings or sharp objects (pierced earrings) being put in and taken out thru time ended up with a ragged appearance. I switched to felt which looks fine and holds up far better. I cut a piece of poster board to size (have also used cereal boxes) then cut the felt slightly over sized. Glue the felt to the paper & paper to box. I use a painter’s knife to tuck the felt in. Ends up a neat job.

I have those same concerns. I am finding out that not all adhesives are the same. The acrylic paint being offered by some suppliers is not nearly as thick or sticky. There are also issues with dry time. I have found that only the Donjer, Suede Tex adhesive hold better and last longer.
I also use the fabric everywhere I can. But right now, I am making shadow boxes with old folding rulers, as Christmas presents for my brothers in law. A friend did the cnc work. Flocking is the only option here. Since they will not be handled a lot, I am not worried about durability as much.

Beautiful work there! I love the inlaid layout. The flocking came out great also. I would guess that in that application, the folding rules likely won’t be going in and out of the display very often, so longevity of the flocking under use shouldn’t be a concern. Beautiful work again!

Thanks, Heath. It drives me crazy that the one in the third left row is facing the opposite way. But I wanted the brand and model number to be visible, so that Lufkin had to face right rather than left.
Fun project. I have been buying those old rulers for years and throwing them in a box. Finally came up with this idea.
