Thinking of our friends in the western part of the state and surrounding area.

My son’s family are in Asheville. They are lucky enough to have power, but no internet. His wife went to the fire station where she was able to get 10 minutes of wifi access. She says the damage anywhere along the river was devastating. Lots of refrigerators, housing materials and propane tanks floating down the river. One grocery store opened but there’s a long line just to get in.

I suspect most of our members in the area have no way to communicate to the outside world. If they can reach out, let us know what we can do to help.

My company has a sister plant in Enka, on Sandhill Rd, on the South West side of Asheville, if anyone knows where that's at. I've been to it several times. The entire plant was flooded with 2 FEET of water! Two of the employees lost their homes. We here at the Durham site are very saddened. It's going to take a ton of work to get the plant back up and running! Not to mention taking care of the employees!

Feel for all who are getting hit. We had 15" in less than 12 hours 3 weeks ago from the last hurricane. Wind is one thing, but rain is what really more damaging.

I'm in Sarasota Fl. Lots of wind but not much rain. Storm surge was 10 ft. at the coast so many coastal areas under water. A big problem was electric cars in the lower garages of coastal homes. Salt water interacts with the lithium batteries and causes fires that are hard to put out. They burned uncontrollably.

Thankfully my family members in FL, western NC and Kentucky fared okay. Heartfelt prayers to all those that will be suffering for quite a while.

With the major East/West NC corridor of commerce closed for a while, I expect to see more consequences for all of us.

We lost power up here by the parkway in Floyd, VA on Friday morning. Still out with restoration estimated at 11 PM Tuesday. But I have a whole house generator so am in pretty good shape. Only one large limb down and it landed in the yard not the driveway. There were over 200,000 people in the area without power. Crews from Mississippi were seen in a nearby location. Power company is working hard.

Me too... my heart goes out to all affected by this Helene, 100 year storm. It is a really epoch tragedy for those in and around the Black Mountain and Asheville areas, who will likely not have water for months and may have no way to come and go due to bridges and roads being out. I have heard that Penland School of Craft has been his hard as well. Another nearby area in North Eastern Tennesse floods are severe as well, Liam Hoffman Blacksmithing was flooded, and he has several employees who have been displaced. He is raising money for them with a gofund me page. Hoping for good neighbors and community in these hard times.

I have been overseas and returning tomorrow. The devastation that I have seen online and on TV is depressing to say the least. I would like to make a donation once I get home and wonder what the best group is for Western NC. Samaritan's Purse comes to mind, and I assume there is a western carolina foodbank network like we have here down East. Not a big fan of American Red Cross as they are bloated and tend to dribble out the money while sitting on $billions. Are there other worthy recipients that are doing real relief?

I know Baptist Men disaster units are gearing up. I would definitely stick with the main line groups. Our Marine Corps League unit deployed with the salvation Army for Katrina on their 2nd trip down. Units like that don't get the federal reimbursement that the red cross gets. In fact they were upset with the League for cutting in on there action. Pretty sad when you think about it. So many in need and greed rears it's ugly head. More units equals faster service to more folks so they can get back to work and more can come eat and shower. Sad times..

Correction it's now called Baptist on Mission NC

On the other hand, my son’s family has an electric car. With a gas shortage, they have been loaning it out to people who can’t get gas.🤔

A lot of church's are doing donations and having them picked up by the Nat Guard send them straight to where there needed

One of the crew at work is a volunteer firefighter and his station is working with one of the stations near Asheville to cook for people forced out of their homes by the flood. He asked for bulk food they can make into large pots of soup. We have some emergency supplies from when we were a family of six and since it is only two of us now we don’t need so much. I’m taking about 150 pounds of freeze dried foods to him today.

If you have long term emergency food supply now is a great time to use and replace with smaller containers.

I run a food bank which is part of the Eastern and Central NC network. We have been told that the main food bank is Asheville has been damaged and is currently shutdown. We have been told that currently they are not able to get much food into the Western network due to all the road closures.

Just as an aside. Ashe county and down was hit. Asheville and its environs were hit pretty hard but the other counties might be easier accessed now with smaller groups and supply runs while the larger groups work the hardest hit..I saw yesterday thwt the 26 MEU out of Camp Lejuene is now involved so I would assume that could mean airlift and tent cities and they would concentrate as well on the hardest and most dense areas. I couple from our church has connections to somebody in Ashe county and will be making a run with a truck load. I do know they want to limit traffic so the more that can be taken in larger vehicles the better. As time goes on I'm sure local collection points will.be set up and runs made by tractor trailer load. We can keep our eye open for those opportunities.
