Suggestion for new moderators

I think that we should ask Jeff and Reggie to be moderators. I am serious. I have found in my work life that making repeat offenders responsible for monitoring the thing they are bad at improves their behavior dramatically. That then impacts others either by eliminating the bratty behavior they were responding to, putting the fear of being assigned as a moderator, or losing their "playmates" and even being moderated by those same people.

We need to think on this long and hard. Yes now with Roger gone we will have to rotate some assignments. I will announce a new mod today and I am talking to another person as well.

I am sorry but I couldn't disagree more. No harm intended but I just don't see the benefit in it. There have been way too many incidents involving both of them (Reggie is a close personal friend of mine) but I just can't see it. Not to mention they would then have access to all of the lengthy threads of discussion about them and their actions. I feel strongly it would be most counter productive.

In spirit I agree, but I have little confidence they'd do the job.

The job is about holding posts up against policy, not ones personal opinion about a post. I would have little confidence in them approaching the job that way.

But, I'd support an attempt to recruit them. They can always be asked to step down. Asking them to participate might be just the answer.

I have to side with Tracy on this one. Jeff and Reggie have both at various times expressed disagreement with our moderation policies and I do not think that making them moderators would change their opinions. As Jim pointed out, we moderate to fit NCWW policy not based upon our own opinion of posts and I do not think they could moderate effectively using that criteria. :wsmile:

Can't speak to Reggie, but Jeff in on virtually constant probation. One more delibrate violation will most likely result in suspension or banishment. I would not be comfortable with him as a moderator.

I thought Tracy was going to ask for volunteers in the corporate members forum?

I would say for Jeff no for the reasons already listed. It might work, but it would be risky. Reggie, I could see as it could give a different perspective to him and to the moderator team, but I don't have strong/hard feelings either way.

Cathy, coming from the corporate world I was able to "turn around" quite a few employees by using this very tactic, and I think that you've posted a very novel idea.

I did have a few that were beyond salvage though, and I'm worried that considering the personalities in this instance it may backfire on us.

I'd like to add that even though I don't support makking J&R Mods, I really like the fact that you took the time to suggest an "out of the box" idea and are seeking ways to proactively help address this problem. Please keep it up!

I was and then it slipped my mind. Then other things started happening. I will be glad to do that if you think it is still a good idea.

.....and I agree with all of you too:icon_thum.

Honestly, I think Reggie would be a decent moderator. Much of what he post that's not received well is a display of his sense of humor, not because he's a trouble maker. Jeff on the other hand is another story. I believe if Reggie were asked he would do a good job and be far less inclined to buck policy.

The issue Tracy brought up is valid tho. I wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings that read previous mod post relating to them.

I do recommend we place a current moderator/'s in Rogers place as those forums need seasoned members.

I would not support these two guys as moderators -- I think we have many other good members that would do a better job -- we need to solicit volunteers. JMTCW.

I will write the solicitation tonight or tomorrow and put it before the BOD for approval. I will then post it to the corporate members as an announcement in a closed thread (one that does not allow replies) and instruct the volunteers to contact myself or Scott Miller. We as the senior moderator team will weigh the candidates and put them before the BOD and Staff.

Cathy, I think your idea was grand. However harsh my first reply was, it was meant without harm and only reflected in my mind the two candidates. Reggie would be a good moderator; prior to the things he has been moderated on. Post moderation though I think it could be counter productive. Jeff would in my opinion would be extremely mad reading the threads; (and there are many) relating specifically to his behavior. Thank you for a terrific idea that I feel certain North Carolina Woodworker will use in the future.
