Stanley no4 $50

Stanley no4 type 10. This has all correct time period parts (minus the iron, but I believe I have one somewhere from a parts bin.) There is no serious pitting anywhere on the plane. There is a crack in the rear handle that I have repaired. Additionally, the plane has roughly 50% of the original japanning. Overall a great looking plane with lots of great years of use left. I have sharpened to 1200 grit and able to get fine shaving without doing a ton of fettling.
$50 negotiable located near Raleigh. I'd prefer not to ship but I'm open to discussion.

What does fettling mean to you? I caught my eye and I found a definition that sounded a bit extreme in the context of fine shavings from a plane - to say the least!

"Fettling is a process of removing excess material from steel castings. It involves the process of knock out, de-coring, gas & arc cutting, heat treatment, shot blasting ,grinding, welding and pickling & passivation."

So my understanding (which may not be the technical definition) is the process of adjustment to get finer shavings. Sometimes includes flattening the sole, fitting the chip breaker and iron, and adjusting all the designed adjustments.

I am no plane expert but that looks like a very fair price. Curious if you know the year of manufacture. The reason I ask is I have what I believe is my great grandfather's number 4 which was made in 1888. Oddly it came from an era when Stanley had a left turning adjustment knob. Frankly it drives me nuts so I am debating buying something different.

So this is a type 10 that was made roughly 1907-1909. If I'm not mistaken I believe they switched the threads in the type 7 range. (1893-99) type 10 was also the first iteration that has an adjustment screw to move the frog backwards and forwards.

At one time I would have considered this a very high price. But now even worn broken incomplete planes are being priced higher. I think this is a good bargain.
