The few I can think of in the Raleigh area include:
- Woodcraft as you mentioned
- Capitol City lumber - near NC fairgrounds (Blue Ridge and Hillsborough) - actually Beryl Rd; decent hardwood selection (will cut a piece, but must 'leave' a minimum 6' piece); some veneers; no bowl blanks that I know of; lots of construction materials. Not a cheap place, but discounts available on some materials (10%) if you sign up for an account. I'm closest to this one so I shop there often. Also carries plywood and good building trim selection.
- Anchor hardwoods - a supporter of this site and will give NCWW discounts (for DQ members). Old Wake Forest up near I-540 and Capitol Blvd. Carries good selection of hardwoods (including heartwood pine) and allows you to have pieces cut without minimums or minimums left; also carries turning blanks. A few pieces of plywood (not much) but can order what you need.
- Klingspor's 'on Capitol" in a strip mall - near the Beltline; decent selection of hardwoods, unsure if they carry veneers; bowl blanks (looks like same supplier as Anchor). Good tool selection here too. Also offers discounts to NCWW DQ members. Be sure to get your sand paper from their bulk (GOLD) papers (sold by the pound $3 per pound for gold; these are remnants from their manufacturing of large belts etc; but the BEST deal ever for small pieces perfect for lathe sanding).
-place whose name I forget - on poole Rd just outside the Beltline. Weyerhauser maybe? Can't recall. The do sell retail, although their primary customer base is likely wholesale. Reasonable selection of hardwoods, mostly domestic if I recall correctly. Plenty of cabinet hardware (drawer slides, pulls) here. Unsure about veneers here; no bowl blanks that I recall.
I have bought materials and/or supplies from all of these - and would do so again. For plywoods in any quantity I would definitely go to Poole Rd; for most hardwoods I go to Capitol City (closest for me); tools Woodcraft and/or Kilngspor (lathe sandpaper here); hardwoods and bowl blanks at Anchor (long drive for me).
