Today, I went to the optical center at Wal-Mart, had my eyes checked and ordered new prescription safety glasses. Total cost was less than $200. I've been using their optical services since 2007. Even if your health insurance doesn't cover glasses, ask about discount based on brand of insurance.

For anybody else looking, I have a pair of ZenniOptical goggles that get the job done for only about $30. Price includes frames, prescription lenses, shipping and handling. Mine took about two weeks to arrive from the time I placed the order.

The way I figure it, most glasses around these days are probably made in China, why not purchase direct for 10% the price? I have at least ten pairs of glasses from Zenni purchased over the last five years or so for various reasons (frame-less, rimmed, costume, safety, extra home and work, lost in pool) and have had zero issues with the prescriptions or frame quality. People I've recommended them to have also been impressed. If you've ever seen German made rimless glasses, you might notice a quality difference but I've never been in that market. :)

But are you sure they are safety glasses you got? I mean, are the lenses impact proof?

There are a number of standards for impact, but I am confident they will protect my eyes from any blow that wouldn't otherwise knock my head off. :)

Seriously, I think the lenses are CR-39 and they carry no certifications or test data. But they have good optical properties, are comfortable, completely protect me from tiny chips, splinters and dust (top, bottom, side protection), and have flexible frames that appear to deform over breaking on light to moderate impacts.

IMO, too much is probably made of polycarbonate lenses. Regular plastic is already shatter resistant and I suspect a blow that can break CR-39 would likely be lethal wearing anything less than an NFL helmet and full face mask with eye guard. This is the level of resistance I call "impact proof enough", which also leaves me wondering if I shouldn't be wearing heavy armor over my neck, face, and major arteries. ;)
