Ladies and Gentlemen, we are past the half way point for accepting calendar entries. At this point only half the categories even have qualified entries. Remember we need a cover and twleve month photos. Throughout the year I have seen hundreds of wonderful postings of you folks showing off your wonderful craftsmanship. Enough that we should no less then a dozen entries in each catergory.

This contest is for you folks. It is something the majority of the active members have asked NCWW to continue. It is not being run for the BoD or Staff. It is for you.

Remember your photo must be roughly 2300 x 1800 at 200 dpi. The 2300 is the width and 1800 is the height.

So let's get a move on today.

Scott,
So like 4000 by 3000 is o.k. since they can be resized downward with no quality loss?
Thanks

Ken we really want you resize it. It is more work for us to do it and we do not want to responsible if we have a problem doing the resize. In addition we are under a tight schedule if we want to produce these in time.

4000 x 3130 would be correct since the pictures have to be in the correct proportion.

3450 x 2475 would be ideal

O.K., I've gotten myself confused.
Our cameras don't know anything about DPI's, they only know resolution. I believe DPI is only a measure of the printing quality. What print size do you need?

In Paint.net an image 2300 by 1725 at 200 pixels/inch will print 11.5 by 8.63. Maintain that print size and change the resolution to 300 p/i and the print size decreases to 7.67 by 5.75.

My Canon takes a max resolution of 4000 by 3000, if I resize to get the 11.5 by 8.6 print size at 300 p/i the resolution is 3449 by 2587

If I submit an image at 4000 by 3000 and 347 pixels/inch it will print 11.5 by 8.6 at better quality than 2300 by 1725 at 200 pixels/inch, correct??

I'm not trying to be difficult Scott, but throwing DPI into this when cameras don't have an adjustment for that and the graphics apps I use only reference DPI as print size is confusing for me.

So, is what you need images to print at the sizes specified in the rules, regardless of resolution size?

I apologize for being so thick headed.

Ken,

At 4000 x 3000 you are a little tall in height you would need 4000 x 2870 to be in proportion.

So you can crop to 4000 x 2870 and be correct or you can scale to 3450 x 2475 and the picture will be a little squished (less than 5%).

You are correct about the dpi, that is just a print resolution reference. We get used to converting all the time but you don't really have to worry about that.

A higher res is always welcome, low res just looks bad when printed, so anything less than 2300 x 1650 is going to look pixelated and amateurish on the printed calendar.

There are a lot of decent 10 MP cameras out now. My wife bought a little Fugi for less than $200 that makes pretty good pictures, my daughter got an Olympus that retails for $250 but got it free when she bought her laptop computer. The Canon SLR type Powershot SX10is is what i use. I really like it except for lowlight distance shots, the chipset is not the best for those conditions. Amazon has mine for $354.

Thanks, The sound you just didnt hear was my camera hitting the bottom of the trash can. I am off to buy a real camera
We just got the Canon SD780 IS. 12 MP, full auto or plenty of manual control. And it makes hi-def video. We're tickled with it until I can get a DSLR.
It goes for around $250

Just my 2 cents but I think you should be more open on the categories. For example, only having 1 picture for non-chair furniture seems limiting (e.g. what if there are 5 great entries in one category but only 1 in another?). Also, the 1 picture per page kind of disqualified my entry since it is a tall skinny object that can't really fit into a landscape format. Maybe you could mix it up a little next time.

Maybe I should have saved the feedback for the end of the contest; I still like the calendar and will definitely pick up at least 2 regardless. Thanks for the organizing and I'm sure no matter what decisions you made someone would have a comment ;)
