We've neglected the spinny creators for awhile so this month is for the turners. The focus is on spindle turnings. This means anything turned spindle fashion (wait your turn bowlers), i.e., grain parallel to the bed (for the most part). Balusters, finials, inside/out turnings, tops, towers or whatever you can imagine. Make us dizzy by dazzling us with your doings. For example...

Rules:
-Must be created/completed within the last 24 months - here's a reason to sell the old and build the new
-One submission per creator/artist per category (month)
-Each creator can win a contest no more than once every six months.
-Members vote for winners so your submittal 'marketing' post should reflect quality. Limited to 3 photos and 500 words. One post per submittal. Any Q&A regarding a submittal should be handled by separate post or DM, PM, or Start Conversation. I like the separate post because it doesn't clutter the contest thread, maybe preclude votes being biased, and everyone can share How's It Made with the forum.
-In case of a tie, a judge panel will make the selection. Judges' decision is final. Judges will remain anonymous.
-Each monthly contest will have two winners, novice and journeyman/veteran/pro. Novice is defined as <3 years woodworking, cumulative. Journeyman is all others. Submitters must indicate if they are novice; honor system applies. If you don't declare, you're an experienced woodworker.

Should journeyman tuners be categorized with veterans and pros? There is a huge difference in skill which affects finished products.

That would complicate the whole contest. When the contest was restarted, the board was seeking a way to encourage the novice woodworker. Thus the 2-levels for the contest, novice and everyone else.

Please note that it is preferred all questions/comments concerning the contest, the entries, etc., be addressed outside the contest thread. P/DMs or new threads are the place for questions, clarifications and, "how'd you do that?". Yes, it is a little aggravation for all of us, but it keeps the contest thread a contest thread.

I appreciate everyone's consideration and respect for this.

We make some very simple "biscuits" at Christmas that are a big part of my wife's family tradition. It is very important that the dough is exactly 1/4 inch and we have tried all manner of techniques to make this happen. After looking at the ONEWAY lathe that my deceased father-in-law left me I decided to finally bite the bullet and make a custom rolling pin that accommodates this requirement. This is actually the first thing I ever turned on my own and think that would qualify me as a novice. That said, I know it is incredibly basic but I was quite happy with the result and this year we turned out (pun intended) some of the best biscuits ever.

Here is my entry, a fun little bottle stopper that I made. It is a macassar ebony with black walnut, bearded (faux fur) gnome. These little guys are just a blast to make and people tend to love them as gifts. It is fairly simple spindle work, the challenge for these is getting the nose the right size/shape as well as the ball on top of the hat.

At this stage of my turning journey I am well past novice but a solid veteran with a chance of going pro. Photos from before and after editing them within the limit of.
