Got a question on Trestle Table design ????

At the head of the table and at the end of the table, how far back should the legs be ? This table is 72 inches long 40 inches wide .Got to have leg room so I can get my belly up to some of that fine cook'n..Thanks for the help.

My table is from one of Norm's books if you would like to look at that example. I have about the same length and width as you are planning for yours. I have about 12 inches over hang on both ends but I see no reason why you can't give yourself a little more. I just looked at mine and in my opinion you should have plenty of support when you give the legs further in. After all no one will be standing on the unsupported ends.

I put 15" on my 66" x 40" table, and would suggest 16" - 18". The top is 1 1/4" thick walnut and it shows no signs of warping or drooping after over a year and the table sets rock solid. To give you an idea of the proportion, here is what mine looked like before finishing. The angle distorts it some but gives you an idea of how it will look
