drawer glide advise

Have drawers that are going to be approx 21" in depth. I would like to use metal slides on the drawer sides instead of making up wooden ones. One of the drawers is to hang file folders so it could potentially carry a lot of weight. Would 20" slides be ok to use? and what brand / model would I buy? I've replaced and adjusted a lot of steel slides while repairing furniture but I've never had to buy any for a project from scratch, I'm quite lost.

Thanks for your help

Jeff, this Link was from a previous post on the subject.

I have since installed more of these slides and they work very well.

Mike thanks for the reply - guess I'm trying to figure out which is better between these two.

Hettich, 05632-020-01500, 20 inch, 100 lb. Full Extension Drawer Slide
Hettich, 1058348, 20 inch, (500mm) Epoxy Coated Drawer Slide

I think it's just a matter of intended use, for the file drawer the heavier ball bearing slides and for the smaller drawers the epoxy coated slides?

Thanks

For the file drawer you will definitely want the full extension. You could use the lighter duty slides for the other drawer as long as you don't need full access to the back of the drawer and you don't mind having two different types of drawer slides.

Also, you could use a 20" slide on a 21" drawer as long as you mount them flush with the back edge of the drawer, otherwise the back of the drawer will be an inch behind the face frame when you pull the drawer out.

Do they make a light duty full extension? I see I will loose almost 3.5 inches using the epoxy coated drawer slides. One pair will be used for a 1" thick writing slab, I suppose I could use the heavy duty full extension for all the drawers and the writing slab. Seems a bit over kill, but doesn't look like I have much choice in the matter. I think I'll go with black instead of natural steel.

I would want 100 lb. Epoxy is just finish and personal preference. Additionally, I would want full extension slides.

Jeff, I just finished a shop cabinet with 15 drawers. Drawers are 22" deep. I used KV ball bearing slides from Woodworkers Hdwe. (www.woodworkershardware.com) that worked out great. I used the 22" slides with 1" overtravel. Part #KV8419 @ $13.02 per pair, 100 lb. capacity. You might check their web site, great delivery time. Good luck.

Do you recall how wide the piece is that attached to the drawer side? I have a 1" thick writing slab that needs a glide also. I was hoping it would be 3/4.

Thanks

IIRC, most are 1 1/4 inches wide. You can get some narrow ones, but for a writing slab, I wouldn't use one. I would get some nylon tape and make a stop/track to let it go in and out.

Travis has the right idea. Really no need to spend money on slides when the nylon tape will work just fine. To answer your original question, on my drawers, the part that attaches to the sides is 15/16 wide. Hope this helps.

Jeff, check this site out. They had some narrow slides, but they were not full extension. They had some other interesting products as well.

Thanks everyone for your help, I'm still a little confused, but not a much as I was started this thread. I never realized there are so many types of slides out there. I think I'm just going to go with the 100 lbs ball bearing full extension slides for all the drawers.

Travis I really like your idea for the writing slab. I'll make up track to support the sides and screw a stop block bottom back of the slab so it wont slide all the way out. If the slab ever needed to come out, unscrew the block. I like the idea of the nylon tape, but I have some felt laying around so I think I'll just use it and some contact cement.

Really appreciate everybody chiming in. I learned I need to read up on all the different types of slides and are there intended uses.

Thanks
