A couple years back, I dug a sugar maple stump out of the ground in Alstead NH.
Cleaned all the dirt off as best I could and slabbed the root system for possibilities. Eventually, it was dry enough to work. Here's the natural curve put to work.

Gawk!

That's drop-dead gorgeous. I sort of doubt if photographs will ever do such a piece of wood justice. It looks like the kind of thing that has to be turned over and over under a good light to watch the ebbs and flows of the grain markings.

A friend just did a stock for an LC Smith double out of a root that was sold as "dried". It still warped to give about a 3/8" cast-on. It was going to a left hand shooter, so all was even better than well. Don't know if the customer will ever learn the truth or not :)

Beautiful gunstock. Lot to be said for root wood. I've got a bunch sitting around drying right now. Can't wait to get into it and see what's in there.

Hey I really appreciate the nice words but...

Take a look with google at Larry Gardner at Artandarms.com

He's really got some eye candy. My stuff just doesn't cut it when Larry pulls his rifles out at the fair. After you see his stuff you'll laugh at my "attempts" at rifles.

i LIKE IT! WHAT'S THE POPPING OIL?

None. Its Nitric Acid with iron filings for stain. Sealed with buttonlac and finished with thin waterlox.

Sometimes the "curve gods" look down on us with favor. My luck would be a cast in for the righty.

Being a finishing idjut, actually finishing idjut First Class after all these years, I'd like to read a short write up on the above, if you find time.
If you do, make it a new thread.
And speak slowly and don't use big words!

:gar-BiThanks, Joe
