I don't know how local the source has to be... I just got the latest catalog from Steve Wall Lumber. They have Alder; 4/4 select is $3.30 per board foot. They also have a 20BF bundle (also 4/4), surfaced and delivered for $90.

Not exactly next door to you, but Rick at the Woodworking Source has nice alder. Friend of mine bought a couple hundred feet a while back to build cabinets out of. It's nice. "Poor Man's cherry!"
