I am cleaning out a basement workshop of equipment, tools, hardware, and lumber and not sure where to sell it (I am not the woodworker). Specifically with the lumber, I believe I have walnut and oak. I have 17 pieces of walnut (total of 77.85 bd ft) and 2 pieces of oak (total of 11.14 bd ft)...
Didn't have skid steer, so we slowly and painfully made our way with a pretty decent backhoe to cut about 300' of driveway. Thanks to Bob for the machine and the backhoe work.
We selected the hottest day of the year (literally) in July to set the trusses. It nearly killed us.
These trusses are straight, plumb, and parallel along their entire length. If you know how flimsy they can be out-of-plane, you'll recognize what a feat that was. Thanks again to Joey for...
Cut the steel and made the holes with a plasma cutter. Then had to match drill all holes through (3) 2 x 12s and what was left of 6 x 6 after notching. Since what was left was so small, I used the steel plates.
Studs (at back of building) weren't permitted to touch the slab (as in conventional construction with a sill plate), so we held them off what would be the floor by 6". If they were to bear on the floor and the floor heaved from frost, they would jack up the building. The studs are to...
Lots of measurement and verification for all aspects.
There's a time to go fast and a time to go slow. This is the SLOW part. All poles are plumb, equidistant, with notches on the same plane.

Hardwood Lumber Grading - the very basics
1) Calculate Board Feet (BF). Measure lumber width, thickness and length. One BF is a piece of lumber that is 1” thick 12” wide and 1 foot long or its equivalent. The formula to figure board feet is as follows:
Thickness * Width * Length...
I was looking at some wood on Ebay described as FAS oak, but seller said it ranged in width down to 4inch. I though FAS meant a minimum of 6 inches wide. Am I wrong or did they change it. What are min widths, lengths for FAS stock. And is "select" lumber FAS that doesnt meet the length and width...
Can someone do a newbie (me) a favor and identify what the different grades of lumber mean (S2, SI as well as different types of quality (choice, select, etc)? The previous post lists KD lumber for sale. I assume that means "Kiln Dried" but I'm not sure. Also, I'm not sure what would be...
