Is it better to store old barn wood dry stacked outside with good ventilation and a pitched roof over it OR Store the wood stacked inside a garage that is not moisture controlled and risk too much humidity?
It might be 1 year before I can actually put this wood to use but need to preserve it...
Hello friends - I cam across 4 barns like the one show in the photo that seem to be in pretty good condition for old barn wood.
I was thinking this might be heart pine or yellow pine, but then after looking at it looks similar to white ash as well. Judging by the tobacco oil curers from...
Didn't have skid steer, so we slowly and painfully made our way with a pretty decent backhoe to cut about 300' of driveway. Thanks to Bob for the machine and the backhoe work.
We selected the hottest day of the year (literally) in July to set the trusses. It nearly killed us.
These trusses are straight, plumb, and parallel along their entire length. If you know how flimsy they can be out-of-plane, you'll recognize what a feat that was. Thanks again to Joey for...
Cut the steel and made the holes with a plasma cutter. Then had to match drill all holes through (3) 2 x 12s and what was left of 6 x 6 after notching. Since what was left was so small, I used the steel plates.

Lots of measurement and verification for all aspects.
There's a time to go fast and a time to go slow. This is the SLOW part. All poles are plumb, equidistant, with notches on the same plane.
I have a customer needing 3500 SF of weathered barn siding. Any species or profile is acceptable. Some old paint on it is not a problem. The wood needs to be sound. The kicker is he only wants to spend $1.00 or so per square foot. Anyone have a source or knows of an old barn and wants to...
