Yard sale planes, possibly becoming an addict

Found a yard sale in Garner this weekend and managed to get by on the 2nd day. Slim pickings over all but I talked to the older fellow who was helping out and he told me he had been a tool and die maker for 50 years. Not a big woodworker but found a couple of decently clean planes (minus the rust from having left them outside between yard sale days.) I asked if he had any more and he said he had one that wasn't for sale. A custom chrome plated craftsman he won in a contest at work haha.

Anyway $10 later I left with what I think to be, a defiance #1245 and a Keen Kutter K4. Irons in good shape and good soles. Looking forward to spending some time on them this weekend.

You hit a home run with the K4. That's a very desirable and relatively uncommon plane. Made by Stanley for Simmons Hardware, it is based on the older Bedrock design. It will be a good user.

I can't wait to see it cleaned up. If you decide you want to flip it bring it down this way. I'm thinking that's worth at least a basic set in trade.....maybe more depending on condition.

I did find later it has B stamped into the bottom of the frog...does that mean it was one of the stanley made?

All of the "K" planes were made by Stanley. They are the older round top Bedrock casting. The "B" cast into them is a foundry mark. That disappeared from Stanley planes around 1908.

The "KK" planes were initially made by the Ohio Tool Company..... I'm not sure who made them later on. They are different but good tools. Not as desirable as a "K".
