If you’re looking to build a first workbench, Rob Cosman has a design that’s reasonable for a relative beginner to put together. The materials are readily obtainable, not obscenely expensive, and you don’t need a lot of tools. I built mine with a circular saw, jig saw, and power drill about a year ago, and I’ve been very happy with it. When I have the space, I might build something more extravagant, but I use this one every day:
