If you were buying a new block plane, would you buy a low angle adjustable mouth block, or would you choose a skewed block? Why? Are there more advantages with the skew? Thanks for any help.

I went with the Lee Valley LA block and love it. The skew would be nice to have, but you can get essentially the same effect by skewing the plane. The skew blocks have a removable side plate that would be handy for cleaning up rabbets, but I have a plane for that. Would I like to have a skewed block? Sure, but it's not high on the priority list.

Go for the skew block plane. I recently used mine to make some shiplap joints in split furring strips. Nice curly shavings.

I would buy both the left and right skew planes (i did), but I use the block planes more often. I have the apron size and both the low and regular angle block (all are Lie Nielson).

If you are only going to get one, you may want to look at the Lee Valley becuase you can get the chamfer guide for it as well (i have these as well).
