Mike, best way to learn how to rub out a finish, start on a several pieces of scrap wood. Prep wood, sand, finish, set aside to cure. Then go at those pieces with what ever turns you on. Practice, on scraps till you find the method that suits you.

Rubbing out a finish is more art than science, basically your using a rubbing abrasive and lubricant on a cured film finish to increase or reduce sheen. There is more to it than that, but getting desired sheen is the end result.

Of course many people are satisfied just applying several coats of paste wax wiping and buffing off. Some folks use a glaze product first then use paste wax over that (One Grand Omega Glaze, then Blitz Wax which is made from carnuba wax). Now use Blitz wax on pens instead of SC Johnsons paste wax and HUT sticks after applying finish.

Sandpaper, 4 ZERO steel wool and rubbing compounds make up the abrasives used. Mineral spirits, naphtha, liquid or paste wax, mineral or vegetable oil, and water make up lubricants used.

Of course you have to completely remove whatever you use as abrasive and lubricant from the piece. Then apply final wax or polish. Check your project for abrasive & wax residue especially where joints meet, break out a tooth pick or tooth brush.

This is just one of many articles on the net on how to rub out a finish.
