Buying Specs for Hardwood/Softwood

I'm getting away from the big box store offerings and have made my first plunge into buying from a local supplier. Having done that and received the order I now realize that I messed up and probably wasted a few $ so I'm asking for advice. No problem with the supplier; they've been very helpful...

Hardwood/Softwood grading

Can someone do a newbie (me) a favor and identify what the different grades of lumber mean (S2, SI as well as different types of quality (choice, select, etc)? The previous post lists KD lumber for sale. I assume that means "Kiln Dried" but I'm not sure. Also, I'm not sure what would be...
