My next door neighbor has a ~45 year old silver maple in his front yard that he wants to take down (before it takes his house down!) Anyway, it is ~32" diameter at about 4' from the ground. It needs to come down because there is a crotch about 10' up that has a hollow with squirrels living in it. The hollow is likely weakening the crotch and half of the tree is aimed at his house. He has a quote from someone to take it down for him but he wants to see if he can find a more "economical" price to remove it. I have heard all the arguments against harvesting yard trees, and it may not be worth it for a soft maple, but thought I would ask. My neighbor is more than happy to pay someone to take it away even if they are going to get lumber from it. If anyone is interested or knows of someone to call, shoot me a PM.
