I have a backdoor neighbor who is having a sweetgum taken down. This tree apparently has been dying for many years. If you looked low on the trunk it looks pretty good, but about half way up you started seeing the dead branches. This tree was about three stories tall.
I talked to the tree guys who were taking it down and he said that it was dead all the way down and that it was very dry. I touched the limb cut and they are right, its dry. I felt the wood chips and they are very dry. He said that the wood would not be of any use for wood working, but would make good firewood.
I didn't see any rot. Is the tree really useless for woodworking? It just looks like it dried vertically in the round.
Anyway, is sweetgum any good for woodworking anyway?
Thanks for the info.
