FYI - when I'm logged in I don't see anyones avatar in thread responses. However, I do see everyone's avatar in thread responses when I'm not logged in.

Jeff, your post made me curious, check you user settings. In edit options, scroll down to thread display options and you will see 3 boxes show signatures, show avatar and show images. I guessing you need to check them to display that option. Hope that does the trick for you.
