I am thinking of building some variation of Russ Wolfs gun drill set up. In it he uses a 6" 4 jaw scroll chuck on his tail stock end...The ones Ive seen are pricey.... Any ideas on where to find a good one for the best price? Here is Russ video.

Orrrrrr some variation of Tyrone Heads tailstock where he incorporates a bearing as a support in his tailstock...The only thing is my flutes are 1 1/2" on the foot end when finished ! Any ideas?? Thanks

Here are Tyrone Head's:

I am planning to make a tailstock like Tyrone's. I have been using my shop made steady center like a tailstock to do the boring and it is not holding up all that well (more play in it every time I use it). I have been looking at bearings at Fastenal. I only need a 3/4" bore and they have a few for around $5. In the larger bores, it looks like they only go to 1.5", but if you scroll down to the metric it goes all the way to 60mm, which is closer to 2.5". Those larger ones are more expensive, but they still show some under $15.

Oh, and BTW, there is a Fastenal in Laurinburg, so you can check which ones they have local to you or just go look.

One more follow up...

I picked up a 3/4" ID bearing and may go back and get a larger one also. I am concerned that leaving only .1" thick walls around the .55" hole I bore may not provide enough strength. I will take a pic later. I have an adjustable bit for my brace that I used to drill a hole half way through a board for the OD of the bearing and then drilled a 1" hole from the other side. I clamped it to my existing steady to test last night and it worked very well. Tonight I will carefully center it (or a larger one) and screw it in place.
