WTB Platter blank

Looking for a dark wood, dried from which I can turn some type of platter in the 15-24" range. Prefer something with some character so it doesn't turn out too boring.

This goes in a starter home with light (cream?) colored walls. This will hang over some sort of sofa/couch. Other furniture pieces in the room are natural finish. There is no desire to "match", but blending, as in natural finish, is requested. Other than that, I've got full design control.

on second thought it may be too plain for you.

How about maple burl?

Gene - not many 15" wide pieces with character in the regular stacks of wood at the typical suppliers, so I doubt those are likely to be fruitful sources. Some wood suppliers are selling larger slab pieces, and I'd expect you might need an off cut from a slab to get what your looking for (I think Raleigh Reclaimed might be worth looking at, but I doubt that location works for you). Down side is that often these large pieces aren't always kiln dried (or de-bugged).

Thank you both. I agree this is a bit of a stretch and expect there will be some compromises.

The walnut can be a choice. The maple would require some dyeing/staining to which I'm not adverse. Please can you send pictures?

A slab may be a reasonable way to start and at this point I'm open to possibilities. Thus this post. A crotch slab would certainly be a consideration.

I know the Hardwood store in Statesville stocks 8-12/4 slabs of sapele which can have some color variations as I look at the console I made earlier this year. Maybe a road trip will be in order. They may have some zebra wood as well.

My walnut is stacked in the garage/shop I don't mind pulling everything out to move but not for photos.
The burl is 5 years old, not kiln dried, I think I have three in the 16-26" range. Would have to chainsaw a slab out for a platter.

I haven't visited West Penn Hardwoods in a few years but they had a big selection of slabs at the time. You might want to check with them

Ask them, Rocky's son is running the business, perhaps he would video or take some photos of blanks, I know it isn't the same as being there, but if they say they have a "special" blank, I would believe them...

What thickness? I just pulled about 2000bd/ft of walnut out of an old building where it's been for the last 40+ years. Most is 5/4 ish. IIRC there are several in the 24" range. I got it for $0 so if I have a piece suitable you can have it. Just have to come get it....

What about exotic? Can't remember, I think it's Brazilian Cherry. Lots of figure, deep gully, 4" X 20+ X 60.
Burried in a closet, have to move 6 sheets of 3/4 plywood to open closet door.

I know it is a long drive, but you are welcome to come and have lunch and take any one of the aforementioned pieces of lumber for free. I would love to see what you do with it. And I really need to clear out some space.
