I am looking to upgrade my shop to a cabinet saw. I don't have alot of experience using this type of machine and am open to ideas and suggestions. Thanks in advance.

The main advantages of a cabinet saw are better dust collection and higher horsepower. The also tend to weigh more and run a lttle more smoothly than a typical contractor saw. For the home saw and small commercial shop the Delta Unisaw has typically dominated the market but their a position has steadily declined in recent years. Powermatic and General build very solid machines as do Jet and Grizzly. The Saw Stop is also supposed to be excellent but pricing tends to put it out of reach of most home shops at around $2,500. Review after review puts the Grizzly as the best buy and you will get more saw for the money with them. You can also get some very good values buying used.

I'm in the same boat and plan to upgrade myself. I will probably look to do a used saw but if I were buying new, I would probably opt for the Grizzly.

Steve, I am sure that your current saw looks inadequate next to the Crescent!

I bought my Delta Unisaw in the mid 90's and I have been very happy with it. Not a single problem yet and in the last 10 years it has cut a lot of wood.

I also have the Craftsman 22124 saw, and have been very happy with it. It fit my budget at the time, and so far I have had no complaints. You would probably want to have a little more HP though if you are looking at doing any production type work. But this saw holds its own to say the least.

I've had a Delta 3 hp Unisaw with a 50" Biesemeyer fence for about 4-years now and have been very pleased with it. I hasn't' failed me yet, but as others have mentioned, there are a lot of high quality TSs on the market today.

Steve,

I have a Grizzly 1023 SLX left tilting cabinet saw that I bought in June 2004 and I absolutley love it and recommend it highly. The review by C John Herbert, above, gives you basics on it (though his saw is the right tilt model and has a smaller table). The saw is well-built, has a dead flat table and with it's 3 HP motor, it can cut 3" of oak like it's butter. My model has the 7' fence rails and can rip to 52". I've got a Forrest Woodworker II blade with stabilizer and it cuts like a dream.

There is a step between the cabinet saw and the contractor types. Hybrids like the DeWalt have the power, weight and smoothness of the big cabinets but at a (slighter) lighter price. If you want some additions, you can get an extension from DeWalt. The DeWalt has a terrific fence and their slider is one of the best made (until you get to the saws that cost mega-bucks). I got the DeWalt a while back with the long table, wheels and the slider. I am absolutely delighted with it.

Michael, I may have a connection that could get that saw at a (significantly) reduced price, but with the local B&D plant nearing its final days, that could be a limited time thing. Had I been in a better financial situation, I would have done that.

Hey Pete....What type of saw is it exactly that you think may be available from the place that's going out of business. Thanks.

I do have an emergency-woodguydisease-trauma-fast-reaction-bank-account for such drastic measures, pm me the details. Maybe it will work out.

It is actually the local DeWalt manufacturing plant, and I know one of the old HR people. He still has contacts inside, and, depending on availability, may be able to get some stuff. Of course it has to be in limited quantities. This guy was instrumental in starting the Tent Sales that the plant used to have. Invite only for the first couple days each year, but the deals were fantastic!
