Wrestling a Dead Anaconda!

I have an Oneida SuperCell dust collector and it came with a 25' four inch hose they describe as a "flex hose." I am not sure I'd use the word "flex" to describe it. I have realized that this super stiff hose is like trying to wrestle a dead Anaconda snake around the shop. I move my tools around in the small workspace I have so permanent ducting is not an option. I called Oneida and they said that it would not relax and that it will always be that stiff so that it will not collapse. Does anyone have experience with this DC and using a more flexible hose? The machine is great and really sucks in a good way, but the hose really sucks in a bad way.

Thanks!

Jeff

From my understanding of the SuperCell, it operates at extremally high suction pressure, which is A) why it works so well w/ 4" hose, and/but B) requires a much heavier-duty/ (thicker wall & reinforced) hose so that it doesn't collapse on itself. If I understand correctly, standard flex-hose is not compatible/ recommended.

That said, 25' is pretty long - could you get by w/ a shorter length? It wont make the hose any more pliable of course, but there would be less to wrestle?

I have a 10 ft hose I got from Amazon. It’s very flexible and seems durable enough. I chose it because it had a steel spiral reinforcement rather than pvc. I honestly don’t know if a steel helix is better than pvc, but my gut feeling is that it is. Also, the pvc hose material is 0.6mm which appears to be slightly thicker than others that are 0.5mm.

FYI, my DC is 1250 CFM, so no threat to collapse the hose.

I have one and that is an understatement. I think I saw Christian Becksvoort say it was as flexible as a 2x4. My shop is small, so I ran the flexible tubing across the basement ceiling over my table saw to a junction where I then have a run I can move to all my other machines like bandsaw, jointer, and planer. From that junction I also connect my smaller shop vac hoses that work fine with it. I connect these to my table saw topside dust collection and to my sander and handheld router. It is no joke wrestling that thing. I love the performance though.

The reason it's so rigid is both to keep it from collasping, and shortening from suction. Reminds me of "Prime " brand cords, flexible in cold weather. Viagra doesn't do half as much as cold weather does for a "Prime " brand cord.

Love the comments, thanks! I'll probably just suspend it overhead per Lee's suggestion, then run drops down to the machines. Until then, I'll just keep score with it....best two out of three falls!! I think the hose in this set up is the Achilles heel. Wonder how stiff and difficult the Harvey dust extractor's hose is? I was on the fence between the Oneida SuperCell and the Harvey...went with Oneida. Now I am second guessing that decision, though I must say that this machine really does suck!

I ran 4” PVC thru out the shop and then cut the flex to make the tool connections. There is so much suction it will pick up the bin when you first crank it up especially if your gate isn’t fully opened. Good luck, i think it is a great product.

It can be worse. My old Ridgid shop vac hose was worn out and rather than spend $140 for a new one, I purchased the Rockler dustright collapsable hose as a replacement. It was less expensive than a replacement hose at Home Depot.

This DC hose is more like a floppy dead anaconda. It comes collapsed in a 3’ box and it will in theory go back to that length but instead stays floppy all over the floor.

I am not sure what I expected but the standard shop vac hose would have been a better choice.

I agree 100% What I thought I was getting is MUCH different from how it functions IRL.

I am hoping to do an overhead drop (like a Festool boom arm only from overhead) and I think (am hopeful) the Rockler hose will work better for that.

Hank, have you thought about using a barn door track system to support your over head hose?
