How is this to work with? When I was a teenager I would cut locust farm posts. It did not look like this, the grain was yellowish green. It was the hardest thing in the hills you could ware out a chainsaw chain cutting a truck load if it. Once this stuff dried it was hard as a rock.

Anybody got any idea what this wood is?? I found it at my town landfill, residents only, so I know it was grown and cut here in MA.
The pieceI found was about 10"x30". It's ring porous, very little smell, it's not an oak. ;-)
Both pieces were Turned endgrain, with the pith in.
First piece is 4.5" tall, second is 8".
There was lots of livestock in the sapwood, but not the heartwood.
Sorry, not a great pic of the bark.

Thanks for any help.
Phil.

Sorry Phil, I grew up up north, but cannot identify that tree.

really nice pieces, BTW! With those only 4 and 8 inches, seems you should have more stock left over for some more pieces, either a couple more that size, or about a million in your usual scale:lol:

all these turners..... I know I cannot approach that slope, I haven't even touched the lathe in MG's shop:eusa_snoo

Thinking that is Locust (black Locust) the grain and color are dead giveways

Thanks guys,I think the bark is too coarse for either locust,it does have similar grain though.
I'm thinking it's some type of Ash, "maybe" an elm, but it doesn't stink like elm usually does.
I found this pic of the endgrain, that's about 10" diameter.
I saw some European ash that looked very similar, maybe "black" ash??

Did you stain / change the color of the wood or is it a clear finish? The color does not match any ash I've seen and ash grain is pretty coarse too. Elm is a lot lighter colored than what's pictured and very differing grain pattern.

I could be wrong but the black spots around the rim of the right hand photo are really kinda giving BL away.

Thanks

Jeff, the two turned pieces were finished with one coat of oil base varnish, no stain.
The black locust and honey locust around here both have fairly smooth bark, except for the thorns.

That looks like ash to me..Honey locust will have clusters of thorns and the black locust lots of large thorns all over

Was wondering if that endgrain pic is the same stuff that came from your turnings? If so I would say that endgrain pic is some kind of ash other than white ask, but the turnings still look like locust to me, I've been wrong before.

Nice turings !!!

Jeff, the endgrain pic is the same log as the turned pieces. I'm purdy sure it's an Ash of some type.
