Anybody here ever make wooden clock works? I spent about three hours the other night looking at various sites and YouTube videos, it seems that with a good scroll saw, a little BB and a lot of patience, one could make it in a month of evenings and weekends. Here's some links:

http://www.scrollsawer.com/toc/toc_26.php

I noticed online the reference to Scroll Saw Spring 2007 with an article and patterns for a works that has a second hand. I'm still trying to decide if I should spring for the $12 getting the back issue shipped to me.

Any experiences either good or bad?

The author of the article (Marc Tovar) has a website http://wooden-clockworks.com/ and his plans are $35. I don't see the one in the article. Getting a reprint for $12 is probably a good deal if it's complete and scaled correctly. Getting all of those teeth just right is pretty fussy stuff w/o a CNC setup. I've tried to get spousal approval for one of these but no doing:no:. She asked me if I wanted her to find the old Macrame stuff.:nah:

Wow, your first link is AMAZING! The best projects are when someone goes so far beyond the specifications that it is either crazy or beautiful. I love his "consciousness test".

Steve, i believe they published a pattern correction in the next issue. I think I have both, in case you can't catch up with Scott.

If somebody starts to build something like that, I would love to know.
I would like to just come over and watch the work for a few days.

Cathy, thanks for the offer. I did catch up with Scott and have both issues of Scroll Saw with the wooden clock. (They re-printed some fixes the following issue.)

Michael, there are a few things to clear off the decks first, so I'm not sure when this would get started. I'll try to post progress here and would be glad to have you or anyone else stop by.

I decided to draw the plans in CAD for a couple of reasons and nearly completed them this weekend. I wanted to make sure reproductions are accurate and re-producable for the inevitable re-makes. I'd also like to model everything in SketchUp to understand all the parts and relationships. And if this works out, it would be fun to experiment with the design--re-configuring the wheels, understanding gear tooth shape, making dynamic sculptures that just move, etc. I'm fascinated by all the wood gear clock links and videos out there.

Cathy which two issues were they... I am going to try and order them from Fox Chapel so I have the patterns. The more I see these the more I want to try them..... Steve let me know if you start one. I would love to see it as you progress through the build.

Kevin, the issues were spring and summer 2007. Those are issues #26 and #27. Steve is using my copies now. You are welcome to borrow them next but you will have to come pick them up.

Kevin, you can order the back copies but they are $12 each with S+H. That's why I asked to borrow Scott's. I'm navigating a ton of meetings the next two days but can get them back to Scott Friday if it helps.
