The back looks nice, but I'm curious why you ran the grain on the side and top sideways rather than lengthwise. Typically grain runs in the longest directions. Just curious.

that is veneer as well. I wanted the straight grain look of rift sawn cherry. I had a flitch of 24 sheets so once I found a patch I liked, it was easy to get a nice repeating pattern. the grain on the inside veneer is running all kinds of directions. the two shelves being fixed and holding it all together made me not really worry about imbalance.
I'll do a post when its closer to done. bottom compartment will have a drawer.
the interior sides of the 4 outer sides of the box have grain running long wise on the interior. The two fixed shelves have grain running the short distance just like the outside of the box.
the underside of the fixed shelves is scraps essentially.
