First thing is that the Phrase "Active Member" seems to be the cause of some of the misconception and "panic" Perhaps, Member in good standing, or just member once they reach the criteria.

Anyway, after playing with my ideas some more, the whole thing became simpler than I thought. The reality is that I am concerned with only 2 things, how long you have been a member and how often you visit. My first thoughts and 30 days a member, and at least an average of 1 real visit a week. Once a member has 8 weeks of longevity, then the average of visits would be for the last 8 weeks.

I like that idea. It seem that many people have thought that the "post count" police was coming, regardless of how many times you said "POST COUNT DOES NOT MATTER". I can understand the fears. I think it addresses all problems we have identified. As long as the member logs in, they're in good standing, even if they don't post, which is fine.

I'll second that. :icon_thum I still think that being active on the site means participating in the sites activities i.e. forums. And that you should be a contributing member to be considered active. But that seems to get folks upset, even though the upset ones would be considered active. And if the thought of needing to have a few contributions (posts/thread) worries any members, well then the solution is to participate. I know opinions are like butts, everyone has one and often they stink. But that is what I think. I don't know how many times I have brought up the site to see 10 members, and no one posting anything. The information and interplay is why I enjoy the time I spend on this site, and without contributions to the forum there is no information or interplay.
As far those member who think they have nothing to contribute, that's wrong. I would like to think that the membership of this site would welcome the contribution of any member, even if it isn't the most technical woodworking information, or the finest project. I feel more comfortable posting a question or a basic project on this site than I do on Woodnet, and that is due to how every post is received, with sincerity here, with sarcasm there. So there should be no reason that a member should think that they have nothing to contribute. Heck, without a lick of woodworking knowledge or even any common sense a member can contribute by welcoming new members when they post their introductions in the "Who We Are" forum, which still has the highest ratio of posts to threads, and is still the most popular forums.

Does us not logging out affect how often it says we "visit" a week? Makes no never mind to me - obviously I'm on the site and not afraid to post :lol: .

IMHO, the Woody Allen theory should apply to members - 80% of life is just showing up. If someone is a regular visitor, it doesn't matter to me if they post or just read and learn. Over time, most people will develop a comfort level and jump in from time to time. Some people are introverts and may never post. If they get a sense of enjoyment and learn by lurking, I don't have a problem with that. You never know, the one time they feel compelled to post, they may be the only person that can answer a question that has the rest of us stumped.

I agree with all of you guys. It all sounds like a good plan. I know much of the time I learn much more from just reading, and not posting like many of the members here.

Ditto. Lots of people are regulars, but don't post a lot.
