To the Collective Brain:
I need to bid a grand brazillian cherry staircase for a client. I was wondering if anybody knows anywhere near asheville (within an hour or so) to get it. Or does anybody know a ballpark price for 4/4 and 5/4.

Dave,

Kyle Edwards (Kyle) may be able to help. I think he has access to Brazilian Cherry.

Also...This place amazon Exotic Hardwoods is ~4 miles from my house and ~2.5hrs from the I-40 Enka-Candler exit. Great people to deal with. I've gotten a few odd pieces of lumber, plywood and decking from them. They have access to kiln dried dimensional lumber and millwork in different South American woods and great prices. If it comes from South America (and it's not Brazilian Rosewood  ) they can get it. They have prices on stair components made out of Peruvian Cherry under accessories but may can get you whatever wood you want.

I'm looking at the Cumaru (Braz.Teak) w/ a Black Walnut and Holly inlaid border for my new kitchen floor. Not looking forward to predrilling pilot holes on a few hundred nails, but it's sure pretty and tougher than high speed steel!

I could be wrong (and many times am) but I think that another name for Brazilian Cherry is Jatoba. You might look for that.

Both the Hardwood Store of NC and Wall Lumber have it listed. Check under the NC Wood Suppliers tab at the top of the page.

David, You need to be looking for Jatoba, which is commonly known in the US as Brazilian Cherry -- it is not a member of the Cherry family, but is a very durable wood. Locally, Cormark International carries 4/4 Jatoba at $4.50/Bft and Wall Lumber in Mayodan carries 4/4 at $3.80/Bft.

I bought my Jatoba at Wall Lumber.

Redoing my stairs with it is on my list of things to do.

They only advertise 4/4 on the website, but when I stopped by they also had 5/4. They told me that they do carry 5/4 from time to time.

If you call them, let me know if they have any.

Wow, that's a lot less than the hardwood store. Maybe I'll have to make a trip to Wall Lumber someday. I want to check out their cabinet doors and flooring too.

Ditto on Wall Lumber. They had it in stock last time I went there which was less than a month ago. Give them a call, they are excellent to deal with.
