I was about to head out to buy this at the local store:
http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200333231_200333231
but I (wisely) phoned first - it turns out that retail stores don't stock that item. I guess I shouldn't be surprised - not something most people will ever buy :>

Any idea where I can buy one locally? I don't know much about these - never used one - but the one I linked seems to be more heavy-duty than others. I've read about a lot of breakage with wooden handles. My present problem log is a 16' long 14" diameter oak log that I need to move in order to cut (can't cut it in the current position). Should I expect to be able to move that myself with a cant hook? How large of a log can one average guy move?

Any advice/experiences appreciated!

Those are handy, but a log jack may work better.
On the farm, we used a length of pipe with a piece of chain looped at 1 end. Rope would probably work. Then we would use a short piece of wood as a fulcrum.

Chris, the Northern cant hooks will bend. If you really want to buy a good one, purchase one from Logrite (who is the OEM manufacturer for Woodmizer's large cant hooks)

You can easily move a 14" diameter oak log by yourself with a cant hook, but if you're going to be cutting it up for firewood or bowl blanks, I concur with Joe that a Log Jack would be a better choice. Agri-supply should have them.

The first three google results for "log jack" went to products like::
http://www.tractorsupply.com/log-splitters/swisher-log-jack-amp-roller-2153443

What is the difference between that and a cant hook?
Look closely and you'll a foot or jack fulcrum device. The purpose is to lift the end of the log for cutting. Mine will actually overbalance and hold itself 'jacked'

I'm trying to envision something with a rope or chain - but how do you get that around the log? I can't lift the log, obviously.

Shovels work but most of the time we just created a channel with the other end of the pipe and fished the chain under.

Dig a path under the log - or lay down the rope or chain and roll the log over the rope or chain. I'm with Scott - don't waste your money on cheap cant hooks, go with made in USA logrite. A 14" diameter log is mere child's play for a 60" logrite can't hook
