In talking to Will Monday night, he mentioned that he had bought the plans for his reindeer project some time ago and was just now starting the build. So we joked that rather than early for Christmas '08 he is actually "right on time"! :icon_thum

I've certainly bought plans with the intention of building a project but it often turns out to be MUCH longer than planned to actually build it! :5censored

So, I'm curious what the average "P2B" (Plan to Build) time is for most of you? :icon_scra
Or is your skill level such that you don't buy plans at all? :notworthy:

For me, it depends on the project and who needs it. Sometimes I start building within a week or so and some plans I have because I'd like to build them some day.

You mean buy plans and actually make something out of them! What a great idea!

All joking aside. I have done both. I have bought plans on speculation and for a special project.

Between selling the NJ house, living in temporary quarters, buying the VA house, and getting the shop built I have been unable to build anything since all my tools were in storage. For about a year all I have been able to do is plan :rotflm:. With the backlog of projects my P2B time will be skewed for quite a while :eusa_doh:. The bright side is, now that I am retired my shop time is no longer limited to after work and weekend hours :eusa_danc

I don't buy plans, but do my own designs in 3D CAD and that process can be 3 months or more. From there it's often another month before the first cut!

I have never bought any plans, I have made a few things from free plans out of magazines. That doesn't mean that my skills are so great that I don't need them, it just means that when I make something I don't want it to be compared to what it should look like :lol::lol:
I find that half of the fun of woodworking is the planning, and subsequent plan alteration :eusa_doh: of figuring out how to make something.

When and if I spend the money for plans, I usually can't wait to try them as soon as they arrive. However, I may only build one "set" from the plans and then they get put aside for some time to come. Usually. FWIW

Never used any paper type plans:eusa_thin
Sometimes I roll it around in my head for a month, and sometimes just start on a project right away:icon_scra

I've bought a total of two plans so far and neither of the projects have been built. :eusa_doh:

I too like the Zen adventure of seeing where the project takes me but, more often than not, I end up with a big pile of sawdust and wondering where all that purty wood I had went to!:icon_scra

Only bought one plan and then never built from it. Mostly just take plans from books and magazines and modify to suit the overall idea. I do sketch a plan now and then just to get an idea of the amount of stock that I need. (I don't usually add the extra 10-20% for goof's etc.:violent1: and end up having to hunt down more material. But hey! That's most of the fun, ain't it?:5eek:)

Most of the time I can say that whatever gets finished it is truly my creation - for better or worse!:eek:mg_smile:eek:mg_smile
